PRISONER SINCE BORN
This 10-year-old girl in middle has been a prisoner in Amritsar since birth for no fault of hers and now going to a country she has never been to.
Her tragic story started in 2006 when two women Fatima bibi and Mumtaz were caught at village Attari station peddling drugs across the international border while on a journey from Pakistan to Uttar Pradesh. The duo was booked under Narcotics And Psychotropic Substance act and slapped with 10-year imprisonment and 2 lakh rupees fine each.
In 2006, then Pregnant Fatima gave birth to a girl, Hena behind the bars who has been there since then with her mother and aunt. The sentence ended in November 2016 but the duo was unable to pay penalty and so were their family from Pakistan.
But now a Batala based NGO “SARBAT DA BHALA” has come forward to support their release by paying a fine of rupees 4 Lakh.
The advocate from NGO Navjot Kaur Chhaba who appeared fo the two women said “We filed an appeal in the Punjab and Haryana High Court seeking permission for Fatima to talk to her family members in Pakistan. But her husband said he cannot afford to pay, and sought our help, after which we decided to pursue the case.”
By the way according to this article in Indian express from 2011 Fatima denied her felony and stated they were innocent and that the 400 gram smack that had been seized from their train compartment belonged to a fellow traveler, Rashid, whom they didn’t know. She said Rashid had even admitted the same in court, but still, Rashidan, Mumtaz and she were convicted under the strict Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act.
However, a battle still lies ahead of poor Hena as according to the international law being born in Indian territory she is now an Indian national and needs Indian passport and Pakistani visa to go back to Pakistan with her mother.
We just hope Hena makes it through the formalities and starts a new life with freedom.
